Welcome Sage

“I began my journey with Borrego Seniors Community Center a few months ago as a volunteer Meals on Wheels driver. I liked it so much that I jumped at the chance to become an Assistant part time at the center. It has been great to meet new friends and neighbors!”

Life is sweet for San Diego senior Earl Deshazer six months after moving into his new affordable home at Levant Senior Cottages in Linda Vista.
Earl lives in one of 127-units designed to meet the needs of low-income seniors 55 and up, earning between 25 percent and 50 percent of the Area Median Income.

For many older adults, being independent and aging in their own home for as long as possible is a priority. Home is where they are comfortable, with familiar surroundings in a community they know.

But “aging in place” requires planning ahead and support. This can include help with health care, personal care, making meals, managing money, household chores, transportation and safety.

The County’s Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP) is a care management service for older adults, age 60 and older, who are eligible for Medi-Cal and at risk of being placed in a nursing facility.

MSSP care managers work with the client, family members and medical team to provide services designed to help the client remain independent at home.

One local senior says she wouldn’t have survived this long in her own home if it weren’t for MSSP.

"No Senior Alone For The Holidays" Outreach

The Borrego Seniors Community Center staff and volunteers partnered with the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation to bring holiday cheer to our homebound elders in the Borrego Springs area. The week before Christmas, along with meals, the volunteers delivered a holiday-themed gift bag with puzzle activity books including a pencil and sharpener, a local phone book, back scratcher, spa/bath tools, warm fuzzy socks, and household items such as scented wipes and a bright battery-operated lantern.

“It was such a pleasure to see the glow that these gifts made to these otherwise socially isolated seniors. They appreciated it and this grant enabled us to be able to provide this for them,” said Executive Director Leslie Greathouse.

In addition, our volunteers brought them each a living house plant which was a holiday themed Poinsettia; along with a signature artwork piece crafted by the Children’s Center. The art was a reindeer created from children’s footprints that included the festive touch of a little red bow.

“It is a joy to know that homebound or isolated people are thought of in a special way and I love seeing the beautiful artwork from the children’s center. Knowing the colorful passion that my own 20-month-old daughter (who attends the Children’s Center) creates when she is coloring art to share with someone else; it connects the youth and seniors in a unique and heartfelt way that counts.” ~ Assistant Executive Director Jennifer Dodge-Heater.

Our seniors were grateful and excited to receive these gifts and called to leave messages expressing their appreciation. “I am very appreciative of the thoughtful holiday gifts I received! ~ Cinder.

Another was enthusiastically thankful; sending a holiday card sharing the Joys of Christmas.. “Thank you so much for all the trips made to my house for food! Happy New year! "~ Rita Ann.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and especially our home bound seniors, we are sending a big shout out to the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation for this heartwarming gift to our community, the No Senior Alone for the Holidays grant, which made possible our successful gift bag outreach event!

The Children's Center Forms the Foundation of the Community

At the Children’s Center, loving and caring teachers provide a safe and nurturing place for the children of our young working families. Without the Children’s Center, our local families, especially moms, would not be able to pursue their careers and provide for their families.

Our teachers, led by Center Director Teresa West, provide social, emotional and physical support to their students while maintaining a safe and educational school environment.

Please take a moment to support this vital agency that is providing essential care and service to the working families of Borrego Springs.
